Queensland is blessed with a rich and diverse endowment of resource commodities, making it a major hub for exploration and investment. The state boasts significant deposits of base and precious metals, as well as abundant coal and gas resources. Notably, Queensland has a long history of oil and gas exploration in the South-West corner, and world-class coal seam gas reserves in the Surat and Bowen Basins. The region is also home to high-quality coal resources, including hard coking coal in the Bowen Basin and thermal coals in the Clarence-Moreton and Surat Basins. With the emergence of critical minerals in the “new economy,” Queensland’s exploration efforts have expanded to uncover valuable metals and minerals crucial for advanced and renewable energy technologies. The state’s exploration opportunities are further broadened by the concept of “secondary prospectivity,” which involves revisiting previously explored or mined areas for new potential. Overall, Queensland’s resource commodities present promising opportunities for industry, investors, and the development of new supply chains.

Within the Australian Government’s scope, 26 resource commodities are classified as critical minerals. This categorisation stems from a comprehensive analysis of Australia’s geological resources and their alignment with global technological demands, especially those of partner nations such as the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, India, South Korea, and Canada. By assessing Australia’s mineral endowment and potential, the government aims to ensure the strategic availability of these critical minerals to meet the evolving needs of key global stakeholders in various industries.
